I don’t know about you, but I love dressing in casual wear just as much as I love dressing up. And now that it’s socially acceptable to rock up to dinner in white sneakers, I am going to take full advantage of it. Not that I followed any style rules in the past…
But, I believe there are a few key elements to pulling off an ultra cool casual look, and and one is quality. I feel like a broken record sometimes, but it is important to stock your wardrobe with good quality basics before purchasing on-trend pieces. Then it’s just a matter of mixing and matching those basic pieces together.
You can’t go past a good pair of leather pants, a crisp white cotton tee, white kicks and a bomber jacket. I always feel a lot more put together when my skin is against high quality materials. And before you say anything…Spring is still an appropriate time to wear leather!
Another element is the tailoring. Casual wear can look sloppy if you’re clothes don’t quite fit properly. I always make an effort to 1) tailor my pants to ensure they land just above my ankles, and 2) buy jackets that are not too baggy. I have broad shoulders, so it’s imperative I don’t wear huge baggy jackets that make me look like a rugby player!
As for t-shirts, you want to make sure you buy the right size and fit for your body shape, and/or the look you’re going for. Some t-shirts can look too boxy through the trunk, which can make your outfit look sloppy. But having the right amount of looseness will give you just the right level of casualness you’re after. Still following? In contrast, if you’re planning on wearing a particular t-shirt tucked into skirts/jeans, you may prefer to go for something slightly more fitted, so it doesn’t look too bunchy. Then just when you thought that was difficult enough, brands bring out printed tee’s! So many choices…
I digress. I don’t think you can ever have too many basic white tee’s. But finding the perfect one, may be more difficult than you’d first imagine. Never fear, I have rounded up a few of my favourites below.
- Check out x karla – a collaboration between Justin Bieber and his stylist, Karla.
- AS Colour
- Camilla and Marc
- Ganni – for printed tee’s (because I’m obsessed)
And for all you sneaker freaker’s out there, here is your time to shine! Fresh white kicks really are the pièce de résistance. They’ve endured a lot of the years. From the days of Jerry Seinfeld and Sport Aerobics (guilty), to securing their spot as the one piece that ties together the ultimate chic, casual look. The great thing is that you can usually pick up a great pair for a reasonable price during the sale season’s. But if you can’t wait until then, check out some of my favourite’s below.
Another notable mention is sunglasses. I find my Ray Ban aviators compliment my casual outfits nicely; they’re light and universally flattering.
Once you’ve found the brands that work for you and your style, you’ll have endless options for casual dressing. Pair that with a confident attitude, and you’re all set!
Thanks for stopping by!
