Sequins take me back to my Sport Aerobic days! Endless hours spent sewing sequins piece by piece on each costume to be only worn for a short, albeit intense, two minute performance on stage! Every fitting and pin prick was totally worth it! Ever since then, I have been obsessed with the sparkle and shine that sequins boast.
Have you ever noticed that there hasn’t been a year that has gone by that sequins haven’t featured in a collection on the runway? And thanks to the integration of athleisure into our culture, it is socially acceptable to now mix evening wear into every day casual outfits. An example of this, is this stunning Sachin & Babi t-shirt. I adore how they have incorporated the casualness of a t-shirt with sequins and tassels. It’s such a fun way of adding intrigue to the humble t-shirt.
I got this stunning sequin skirt from Harrolds over a month ago, and I have been dying to wear it. I opted to style it with this spectacular denim jacket by GRLFRND. I love the contrast between evening sequins and ripped denim, as well as the abstract buttoning. And in this instance, I wore nothing underneath the jacket. Style tip: you don’t always have to wear an item as it was intended to be worn!
I added these simple, yet flattering, nudist Stuart Weitzman heels as they don’t take over from the rest of the outfit. They have the added benefit of providing ample height to my stature!
One can not forget these larger than life Racil earrings. Even though they are big and bold, they are extremely easy to style due to their classic shape and crystal embellishment. Another style tip: get more use out of your jewellery, by mixing formal pieces with a casual outfit.
I highly recommend adding some sequin pieces to your wardrobe. And as always, aim to buy quality items. This is particularly important in this instance as the way in which sequins are sown can differ drastically between manufacturers. This technique actually requires the skill and expertise of a very experienced seamstress. And with this comes a very high price tag. In my opinion, it’s worth it. There’s nothing worse than putting on a skirt and having half the sequins missing. So you get what you pay for!
Sequins have formed an integral part in my wardrobe due to their classic nature, and textural impact. I look forward to wearing this skirt with t-shirts, cashmere sweaters, long coats, boots and even sneakers! But I’ll save that for another day…
