I’ve always said it’s best to stay true to yourself and choose styles that suit your persona and subsequently increase your self-confidence. But what if you wanted to add a little edge to your look, without compromising your femininity? Perhaps you are planning on attending a concert, or headed to a funky new bar, and feel you’d like to edge it up a bit!
An edgy yet feminine look can easily be achieved by teaming a boxy t-shirt (such as this fabulously crafted Jac & Jack one) with a miniskirt, which provides the femininity piece. I think the metallic sheen on this skirt really screams edgy, without being grungy.
However, finding the perfect bellowing t-shirt can be challenging. You could achieve this edgy look with a traditional crew neck (seen in this post) or even a wider, thinner crew neck, allowing the clavicle to peak through. The sleeves must be relatively long to give the oversized illusions, and the total length is up to personal preference. I have t-shirts in various lengths so I have plenty of options when tucking them into skirts or jeans.
I stuck to a black and white palette for this look because the sheen from the skirt, as well as the Glomesh from the bag, help to provide much needed texture. Now, lets have a moment for this divine vintage Glomesh bag. I received this from my late great aunty, who had a thing for classic bags. What’s Glomesh you say? Well it’s actually the name of an Australian brand that used the metallic material to produce various bags in the 60s and 70s. This metallic material has been used all over the world, and has made a huge comeback of recent times, with many celebrities sporting the look. The most well known brand, Paco Rabanne, is one of my favourites. The Spanish designers’ work epitomises the title of this article, edgy yet feminine.
Following on from my obsession with Glomesh and metallics, it seemed opportunistic to combine these earrings and choker with the look. I think the choker really adds to the edgy brief, whilst the metallic earrings add a side of intrigue. I don’t usually wear bold necklaces and earrings together, but I felt it suited this look. I mean, an edgy look calls for a bit of style rulebook rebellion, right?!
And as always, these wonderfully versatile Alexandre Birman heels tie the whole look together. Literally! If you are looking for the perfect pair of black heels, you can’t go past these. They are a bit pricer, but the quality speaks for themselves. I have not once found these to be uncomfortable.
So with the right attitude and a little attention to detail, you can achieve an edgy, yet feminine look, that won’t make you look goth! It’s also worthwhile playing around with other textures and shapes, as well hairstyles and eye makeup. And the most important factor in this whole equation, is confidence. You will always look and feel good, when you exude confidence.
